How does It Ends with Us end?
Lily gives birth to Emerson and asks Ryle for a divorce. She refuses to let their daughter inherit the cycle of abuse Lily watched in her parents' marriage and then experienced herself. In the book's epilogue, Lily is co-parenting with Ryle and tells Atlas she is ready to pursue a relationship. The film preserves the divorce and Atlas reunion but removes the book's explicit co-parenting setup.

Why doesn't Lily's love for Ryle change the answer?
The ending does not require Lily to stop loving Ryle before leaving. It argues that affection, remorse and a traumatic explanation are not safety measures. Her decision is based on the pattern of harm and the future risk to Emerson, not on proving Ryle feels nothing.

The title is a boundary, not a romantic declaration
“Us” refers most directly to Lily and her daughter as the generation where the inherited pattern stops. Atlas represents hope after that choice, but he does not make the choice for her.
How does the movie ending differ?
The 2024 film also has Lily ask for a divorce after Emerson's birth and later reunite with Atlas. Its crucial change is Ryle's position in the epilogue. The book shows an active co-parenting arrangement; the film has Lily describe her family as just herself and Emerson. Director Justin Baldoni said a co-parenting scene was filmed but removed because the short ending could not responsibly explain why that arrangement would be safe.

No. The book centers Lily's exit and future rather than a criminal prosecution.
