The 60-second answer
What is Slammed about?
Slammed Book Summary — Colleen Hoover’s 2012 debut novel follows Layken “Lake” Cohen, an eighteen-year-old who moves from Texas to Michigan after her father’s death and quickly connects with her neighbor Will Cooper at a poetry slam. Their romance becomes impossible when Layken discovers that Will is her teacher. The book blends new adult romance, young adult family drama and poetry-slam performance as both characters learn to balance first love with grief and responsibility.

Spoiler-free plot summary
Six months after her father dies, Layken moves with Julia and Kel from Texas to Ypsilanti, Michigan. Kel immediately befriends a boy across the street, and Layken meets that boy’s older brother, Will. Shared music, family loss and a first date at a Detroit poetry slam create an intense connection between them.
On Layken’s first day at her new high school, that connection collides with a fact neither of them knew: Will is the student teacher leading her poetry class. Although Layken is eighteen, his professional role gives him authority over her and puts his job—and his ability to support his brother—at risk. Will insists that they stop the relationship.
Because their brothers are friends and the families live opposite each other, Layken and Will cannot simply disappear from one another’s lives. Poetry becomes the language they use when direct conversation is too painful, while a second family crisis forces Layken to reconsider what love, sacrifice and growing up actually require.

Frequently asked questions
Is Slammed appropriate for teens?
Colleen Hoover’s official books page classifies the Slammed series as Young Adult 14+. That is guidance rather than a formal content rating. Parents and readers may also want to consider the adult student-teacher dynamic, terminal illness, bereavement, language and an unwanted kiss followed by violence.
Is Slammed part of a series?
Yes. It is book one of the three-book Slammed series. The reading order is Slammed, Point of Retreat, then This Girl.
How old is Layken in Slammed?
Layken is eighteen years old when the story begins. Will is twenty-one. Their ages do not remove the professional power imbalance once she learns that he is teaching her class.
Slammed vs Point of Retreat: which comes first?
Slammed comes first. Point of Retreat is book two and continues Layken and Will’s story, so reading it first would reveal the outcome of the original novel.
